The area is well known for its freshwater fishing. In fact, the Palmiet River flows through the Elgin Valley, directly past the Elgin River Lodge. The middle reaches on which the Elgin River Lodge is situated contains various aquatic life including large and small mouth bass, rainbow trout and other freshwater species. Our resident guests are welcome to enjoy the fishing from the lodge itself or on canoes and kickboats should you have. Let it be said some of the biggest bass caught in South Africa have been recorded in our waters.
Do some quiet-water pristine river paddling in the early morning in one of our canoes. You may well be the only person around. The Elgin River Lodge fringes a beautiful stretch of the river with almost half of the entire river catchment area containing indigenous fynbos and striking trees. Look out for some of the aquatic on and under water life including the African Fish Eagle, Cape Clawless Otter and Water Mongoose. Also home to many bird species including kingfisher, duck, heron and numerous waders.
Take a gentle river waft navigated by one of our friendly staff on our custom-crafted Elgin River Lodge barge. We take bookings for a minimum of six and a maximum of 15 guests. Even though there isn’t a prescribed time, we recommend late afternoon to watch the sun set over unobstructed mountain, river, orchard and forest views. You might even get to see the first twinkling stars of the night. Best to reserve a spot in advance. This activity is dependent on the water levels, so please check before your arrival if this option is available. We have a selection of drinks on board or you can pre-order.
Hiking, Running, Cycling
Elgin River Lodge is set on a 100 hectare farm and there is a maze of farm roads and apple orchards waiting to be explored. The farm runs approximately two and half kilometers along the Palmiet River on the Arrieskraal Dam portion of this life blood water mass.
Gerald’s Trail links the Lodge and The Villa and is an easy walk for almost anyone. It climbs and dips between valleys and narrow gorges and includes eyefuls of natural wonder. Other than the trail there are numerous easy and difficult roads, some grueling enough to test the best of us.
Beyond the farm lies the whole of Elgin, a destination that has become a Hiking and Mountain Biking legend. For hiking, running and cycling it’s a dream outing for any level of outdoor adventurer. Come and explore.
